This is a mosaic made by combining two images with MicroSoft ICE (Image Composite Editor). If you scroll down the page you can see the two images that were combined. The free MicroSoft ICE program is a simple to use drag-and-drop that can be used to stitch panoramic pictures.
The two images that were combined started as 2 minute videos recorded through a Celestron-8 (focal length of 80 inches F/10). The videos were captured with a Canon T2i DSLR using EOS Camera Movie Record. To capture as much of the moon as possible the 5x feature was not used. The shutter speed and ISO settings are unknown. Each video was recorded in the default 1056x704 pixel resolution and between 18-19 frames per second. The pictures were made by combining the approximately 2160 frames with RegiStax 5.1.9.2. Processing took hours with my ASUS eee netbook.
The resulting pictures were saved as TIFs with no further processing and dropped on MicroSoft ICE for combination, cropping, and saving. The resulting combined image was processed with Wavelets in RegiStax explaining the improved detail vs. what is seen below. The final image is 1089x977.
The histogram shows areas of featureless white.
