Genitive Word Forms

What are genitive word forms?  Back when star maps were first being drawn by European astronomers, Latin was the language of Science.  And in Latin grammar, the possessive form of a word seems more complicated than its counterpart in English.  For example, the star named alpha Canes Veneticorum is also known to us as  "the alpha star of Canes Venetici."  This star also has the common name Cor Caroli.  When you look at astronomical literature and star maps, either paper or electronic, you will often see star names given as "beta Lyrae" or "omicron Ceti."   Think of your favorite sports star.  Stanley Frank Musial is also known as "Stan the Man."
